Former Nirvana bassist Novoselic running for Wahkiakum clerk
One-time Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic filed Wednesday to run for county clerk in Wahkiakum
County as a member of the “Grange Party” in a bid to bring attention to problems he sees in the Top
Two primary election system.
Wahkiakum County Auditor Diane Tischer confirmed this morning that Novoselic filed for the one-year
unexpired term of county clerk.
Tischer said Wahkiakum County Clerk Barb Blix retired last year. The county commissioners filled
Blix's seat by appointing Democrat Kay Holland in January, Tischer said. Holland also filed to retain
the seat, Tischer said, setting up a challenge between Novoselic and Holland in November. If another
candidate files, there would be a primary in August.
Novoselic, who is Master of the Grays River Grange, said in an e-mail to The Daily World this
morning that he paid his $500-plus non-refundable fee and has the paperwork to prove he filed.
“I listed ‘prefers Grange Party’ in this partisan race,” Novoselic said in the e-mail. “Of course there
is no such thing as a Grange Party. Before I-872 was implemented in Washington, it would have been
illegal to list Grange, or American Legion, Eagles, Boy Scouts or whatever next to a candidate’s name
on the public ballot. The way I-872 is implemented is confusing voters.
"There are already people who think I’m running under Grange party.
“We need to solve this problem in a way that will be accepted by Washington voters and I propose a way to do so in my Grange article,”
Novoselic adds, referring to a column he wrote on the Grange Web site at http://graysriver.grange.wahkiakum.info.
“There’s going to be a resolution at the State Grange Convention in a couple of weeks that proposes a settlement,” Novoselic said. “ I hope
the Grangers pass it. I love the Grange and I’m a very active member. It’s too bad that the state allows this kind of intrusion on private
association. The prank here is how attorneys for the state have parsed words with this ‘prefers party’ business. They’re confusing voters.”
Novoselic once flirted with the idea of running for Lieutenant Governor. He is the chairman of the Wahkiakum County Democratic Party.
