Rockin' News for week of Jan. 5 ,2009

Actor/musician Jack Black has been secretly working with game developer Tim Shafer for
three years on BRUTAL LEGEND, a game in which players can slay enemies by cranking out
heavy metal music. A number of metal superstars are set to lend their voices to the game,
including Rob Halford from JUDAS PRIEST, Lemmy Kilmister from MOTORHEAD and Ronnie
James Dio from DIO/BLACK SABBATH. According to Worthplaying.com, "Brutal Legend is a
third-person action/adventure game starring Jack Black in the role of roadie Eddie Riggs, who
sets out on an epic quest to build an army of rockers with only a broad axe, a big block V8 and
his faithful guitar in hand. In the game, Riggs is drawn back through time to a mythical world
dripped in Rock and Roll folklore where great Metal Titans once ruled and power chords rang
from the countryside for all to hear. When an oppressed people request Eddie's knowledge of
modern warfare, he pulls from his own experience in the only occupation he's ever had, a
roadie for a Heavy Metal band. From this springs the most hellacious army man has ever seen,
and thus brings this ancient world into the Age of Metal. Brutal Legend will be available for
the Xbox 360 and PS3 fall 2009. (Courtesy of hardradio.com)
Lord: "Ulrich won't be part of any Deep Purple plans"
Former DEEP PURPLE keyboardist JON LORD has ruled out reforming the rock group's 'Mark
III' line-up without drummer IAN PAICE, dashing METALLICA star LARS ULRICH's dreams
of playing with his idols.
In a post of his own website (jonlord.org), Lord insists all current talk about a Deep Purple
reunion is premature, and he wouldn't be part of plans if they didn't include Paice.
Lord's comments come a day after Ulrich offered his services to Lord, David Coverdale and
Glenn Hughes.
Lord told Classic Rock magazine, "If they need a drummer, David Coverdale has my number."
But Lord has dashed Ulrich's dreams, stating, "I like Lars and what he has achieved with
Metallica. He's obviously always been very complimentary in his comments about Deep Purple,
and I love the story of his famous nine-years-old “baptism of fire” at our ‘73 concert in The
KB Halle in Copenhagen, but if I was asked to be involved in a “Mark III” reunion (which, by
the way, I haven't....) and I indeed considered that offer, I would not be able to even imagine
it without the presence of Ian Paice." (Courtesy of jonlord.org and pr-inside.com)

Jon Lord on Lars Ulrich joining Deep
Purple lineup: "It all seems like a lot of
hot air and wild speculation to me."
HEAVEN AND HELL: Classic Rock Magazine
Hears Tracks From Upcoming Album
U.K.'s Classic Rock has heard three unfinished tracks from the forthcoming
"debut" album from HEAVEN AND HELL — the band featuring BLACK
SABBATH members Tony Iommi (guitar), Ronnie James Dio (vocals), Geezer
Butler (bass) and Vinny Appice (drums).
In a world-exclusive, the magazine visited the group on the final day of
tracking at Rockfield Studios in Wales, U.K.

According to a posting on the Classic Rock web site, "The songs we heard were a moody, thuddingly malevolent number called 'Rock 'N'
Roll Jesus', the pacier and more anthemic 'Neverwhere', and a slice of sloth-like majesty that's likely to be titled 'Breaking Into
Heaven'."
Other tracks set to appear on the album — which was co-produced by the group and engineer Mike Exeter — include "Bible Black",
"Double Pain" and "Atom + Evil". A late April release via Rhino is expected.
"Each of us submitted a CD of our ideas, and we narrowed it down from there," Iommi told Classic Rock. "In some ways it was like
picking up where we'd left off with 'Dehumanizer' [SABBATH's 1992 album], which was also done at Rockfield."
In a recent interview with Revolver magazine, Ronnie James Dio described the material on the HEAVEN AND HELL album as "a real
cross-section of everything we've done, from 'Heaven and Hell' through 'Mob Rules' and 'Dehumanizer'. I think there's a lot of
'Dehumanizer' in it, but a lot of other things, too, a real good blend of what this band has represented."
